Adopt-a-Forest -
Too Cool For Trash
Gene Sarazan Putter
Mr. Bruce Winchell has been an Adopt-a-Forest
volunteer of the Huron-Manistee National Forest, primarily in Oscoda
and Ogemaw Counties, since 1993.
On Mr. Winchell's first cleanup he found a
discarded Gene Sarazen* putter amongst the trash. He decided
to keep the putter because he had seen the famous golfer in Germany
where Sarazen put on a golf demo for those who served in Special
Services.
Program managers let the famous golfer know
about the find which prompted Mr. Sarazen to write a nice letter to
Mr. Winchell. Mr. Sarazen passed away in 1999, but his putter
and letter remains with Bruce.
*Did you know? Sarazen invented the sand wedge, which he
used for the first time in 1932 to win the British Open in Sandwich,
England. The sand wedge became one of the most revolutionary
pieces of golf equipment of all time--It added to the
enjoyment of the game and also contributed to an evolution among
golf architects in how they constructed courses.
